Results

The main results of the project was a transnational report (in English) as well as national reports that analyse in detail the condition of archaeological profession and labour market in the countries participated in the research. Accordingly, the outcomes of the DISCO were reports presenting the archaeological sector in the following countries: Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Portugal, Slovakia, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Spain, Austria, United Kingdom, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Norway, Netherlands, Slovenia, Belgium, and Denmark

Each report discusses a very particular situation of archaeology. For example, in order to collect core data for the Discovering the Archaeologists of Europe project in the Polish context, a questionnaire was developed. This questionnaire was made up of two parts, with the first part focusing on the individuals working in archaeology and the second part focusing on the institutions employing the archaeologists.

It has to be clearly highlighted that the document reflects the state of the art in Polish archaeology as of the end of 2013. For the first part of the questionnaire, more or less complete data about a total of 866 archaeological positions in 133 different public institutions was collected. The collected data allowed for the first time analyzed different aspects of Polish archaeology in such a detail. For example, it was estimated that there are a total of 242 institutions in Poland that employ archaeologists. 109 of these are private firms, and 133 are public institutions, including: 80 local museums, 14 university departments or institutes, 12 archaeological museums, 11 archaeological foundations, 6 regional branches of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The data allowed also to get a deeper insight into such diverse issues of Polish archaeology as e.g.: numbers of archaeologists by institution type, numbers of employees, past and future employment predictions, size of the workforce, employment status, qualifications, age range, gender balance, to mention but a few.
